This is a brilliant book. Part textbook, part biography and wholly educational.
If you want to know more about public health, global health, economics or just get a better understanding of the world then I would highly recommend reading this first.
If I was running a medical school then this would be the first book on the reading list because it will provide a baseline and context for all other learning.
My key take home points:
Most people are not experts in their own lives, let alone the world. Don’t rely on opinion, go look at the data.
The world is mostly becoming a better place.
Most people are living longer.
Most people are living healthier.
Most children are surviving.
Most health systems are getting better.
Most economies are growing.
The world is mostly getting less polluted.
The number of animals on endangered lists are improving.
More land is being returned to nature.
If you want to make money, then you should look to invest in Africa or Asia as they are the largest growing populations and will have the biggest number of middle class people with disposable income soon.
If you are a pharma company you should look to invest in providing cheap, essential medication to Asia and Africa. There is a gap in the market and it could produce huge profits. A small profit on billions of sales is billions in profit.
Providing online education, accessible via mobile in Africa and Asia could have a huge effect on world wide knowledge.
Thanks for reading. If you would like more book summaries then let me know in the comments.
